For many years, after receiving my degree from Concordia University in 1997, all of my studio spaces were empty white cubes.

I reacted by painting large abstract paintings influenced by colourists such as Guido Molinari, Howard Hodgkin, Paul Klee and others.

In 2004 I was given a space to work inside a house. For the first time I was working in a domestic space filled with plants, pottery and textiles. There was an open window to fields and a river.
In response to this stimuli I worked predominately with still life and food oriented subjects for thirteen years. My work was concerned with saturated colour, flat planes and multiple view points. The pitchers and oranges and plants in my pastels and painting have been gradually taken out and I have returned once more to abstraction. I use colour in the same saturated way and my colour schemes now reflect different cultures especially Indian Miniatures.

I play with sharp and organic lines and shapes balancing one against another.

I am interested in colours and compositions that are calm and rich, pieces to relax into.

Erika Olson began her fine art studies at Queen’s University. She completed her BFA at Concordia University in 1997 and returned to Kingston. She has had numerous solo exhibitions and group shows. Erika has shown in Kingston, Toronto and Calgary and was represented in the UK at the Innocence Gallery.

In 2006, Erika was awarded an Ontario Arts Council Project Grant and an Exhibition Assistant Grant for her installation project “Fish, Water Lilies, Rice’” exhibited at the Modern Fuel Gallery Artist Run Centre. That same year she won a scholarship to the Vermont Studio Centre, allowing her the opportunity to concentrate solely on her art practice and attend seminars delivered by internationally known artists.

In 2015 Erika won a partial scholarship From the Edward and Gertrude Poole Foundation to attend a six week course in Banff, Alberta.
The name of the program was “Food Water Life” presented by Lucy and Jorge Orta.

About her working method Erika says:
“Working on abstracts I feel that each one has meaning and a subject matter. My paintings unfold through concentrated observation. They are processed through my emotional attachment to the subject matter. A subject matter that may not be instantly recognized by the viewer but is driving the work.”
